During my recent sojourn in Corfu I was bitten in the centre of my back not being a very supple person I asked a nearby tourist what was biting me and he quickly removed his flip flop and gave both me and this critter a slap after which only one of us was left standing. I believe it is known locally as the summer horsefly any positive id's out there? ( it had a body length of about 15mm) It also left me with a freely bleeding deep hole in my back but luckily no adverse reaction.
Later while photographing a mantis on an Olive tree I came eyeball to iridecent eyeball with this enormous green horsefly, with a body length of at least 35mm It is one of the largest flies I have ever seen. After a few threats either way 'Zorba 'and I decided to leave each other in peace and I returned my flip flop to my foot and took this picture.
