Been out photographing late season dragonflies today and managed to capture Common Darters (Sympetrum striolatum)perched in copulation wheel, which was nice. I'd assumed that this male was also S.striolatum, but when I came to look athe the pictures on the big screen, I wondered whether it had enough of a waisted abdomen and black enough llegs to be sanguineum instead?
I think I've answered this for myself actually. I went back to my original camera raw file and tweaked the levels a bit in Photoshop. The yellow stripes on the tarsi are pretty clear then so it's definitely not a Ruddy, but a Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum).
Thanks to anyone who posted but who's answer hasn't been mod approved yet!
