I caught this insect dozing on the inside roof of my conservatory, I thought it was a wasp but I've not ever seen any this big before so maybe it's something else. it's an inch long and it's wings are definitely more fly like but I can't find any images of a anything like it with the yellow between it's eyes - is it a wasp or horsefly or something else? Any suggestions please?
The pictures are a bit dark, but it looks to me as though the 2nd sternite (on the underside of the abdomen) is dark/black rather than yellow, which would make it Volucella zonaria. V. inanis has a yellow 2nd sternite.
