If you don't get an ID here, try Dan Brown; he seems to have done a lot of beachcombing on Topsail Beach
The specimen is symetrical which suggests a midline structure and where it is slightly broken it looks to have a bony structure. I am thinking along the lines of a caudal (tail) vertebra of a crocodile/alligator, possibly fossilised.
