Thank you Jaguarondi, that looks right. It was on an outside wall below a window, with a silk egg sac. The closets image I could find was Parasteatoda tepidariorum, but I don't think thats a uk spider from what I could tell.
Hi Ollie, I'm afraid for questions like this you may have to consult the World Spider Catalog (yawn).
The relevant line is -

So the answer to your question seems to be yes. The Br Arach Soc (whose checklist I use) don't always go along with what the rest of the world does.
