See the photo attached - caught this one buzzing around our conservatory.
I'm guessing it's somewhere in the Tephritidae, but can't pin it down.
An ID would be useful - thanks.
I'm in Stamford area.
It's a Chrysops species (Tabanidae). C. relictus is the common one but I don't know how to distinguish it from other species. They bite

I didn't have it down as a horsefly, but of course you're right.
The nearest muddy area is a river around half a mile away so I guess they fly a little distance from the breeding area. I've only seen the one, so hopefully we won't be bitten....
I occasionally get pestered by them when I visit some dry heathland locally and the nearest wet area I can think of is a similar distance - about half a mile.
