Giant Wasp in Scotland?

Hi   I live in Oban Scotlend and recently found this whopper, 1nch long and wide, on Valerian. It is clearly a wasp but I have never seen anything like it. Blackish with narrow buff waistband. Female as it has ovepositor.   Help? Leo Ross

There have been a few of these on the forum lately - it's a sawfly.  These are closely related to ants, bees and wasps although in classified a separate subdivision of the order Hymenoptera. They can be distinguished from wasps as they don't have that characteristic tight waist.

On the basis of that pale band at the front of the abdomen, the wing markings, the orange on the leg extremities and antennae, it's a Birch Sawfly Cimbex femoratus
