One humped and two humped animals...

Recently I visited Morocco and came across lots of interesting sites and sounds.

On one of my outings I came across a man who offered me a ride on a dromedary. I was a little confused as I have never heard this word before. Its a camel!

After a much heated debate he and other passing people alerted me to the supposed fact that this one humped camel looking creature was not a camel but a Dromedary. A camel is apparently a two humped animal. A dromedary is a unique creature not a camel!

I just need clarification on this as I was under the understanding that a one or two humped animal are both offsets of the same species. Like Siberian tigers and bengal tigers same animals but may have adapted differently to their surroundings.

Please clarify as I have been made to look a right berk at work.

Thanks

    Hi Matt30,

I think those people were messing you about. Both the Dromedary and Bactrian are species of Camel. So it would be incorrect to state that a one humped creature (a Camel) is not a Camel.

You should apologise to all the people you work with for arguing with them. They made you look like a berk...and they were correct.

    Kind Regards,

    Dr Camel

    Dear Matt30,

Thank you for posting your Question on this Forum. This is an interesting one as no one has ever queried (in my lifetime anyway) if a Camel is actually called a Camel.

During my visits to different parts of the world, I have gained vast knowledge of all types of Animal including Camels. I can therefore tell you that anything with one or two humps is definitley called a Camel. There two types of offsets of Camels: Dromedary and Bactrian. Dromedary having one hump and Bactrian having two.

In regards to you looking like a berk at work please ensure that all resaearch is done before stating facts as sometimes this can come back and bite you in the bum.

    Take Care now.

    Regards,
