Can anyone help with the identification of this crab (?) found dead on the sea shore at Par Beach in South Cornwall, (2nd May 2014)? Many thanks, Nighthawk
It's called a masked crab, Corystes cassivelaunus,& from the long claws it's a male.It lives in the sand & it's 2 long antennae with bristles between serve as a tube when buried to clean water above the sand.See http://www.marlin.ac.uk/speciesinformation.php?speciesID=3074
Thank you, Rhossilian. It is great to have the crab identified so quickly. I read that this species is quite common but I have never seen one before. I will certainly recognise it again.
