Please identify this stingy bug

I have a lot of flying insects around the front of my house, and the house of my neighbour, first noticed late yesterday afternoon. They are all more honeybee shaped more than anything, other than this horrific looking thing. The window they are flying around is my son's bedroom window. Should I be concerned? They are all locked fast.

Can anyone ID this godawful looking thing, tell me whether there is any danger and any action I should take please?

PS since being stung as a small child I have a hatred for all things fly-y and stingy. It may be irrational, but I even dislike the picture of the, admittedly quite cute, little bee at the top of this page. They make my flesh creep! Apologies for the poor picture, the size was a little bigger than a 50p coin.

Thanks in advance

    That'll be a hornet.

Like wasps, they'll largely leave you alone if you don't aggravate them (though they'll come and check out food and interesting dark holes, which can be alarming if you're that way inclined).
