I was awoken at about 6 o'clock this morning by a fierce, deep buzzing sound from against my bedroom window by this insect. I was convinced that it was a Horse fly, however a friend is adamant that it is a Bee. I do hope that it isn't the latter, as I would be really guilty if I found out that I had in fact swatted a Honey Bee by mistake
It is neither a bee nor a horse-fly, but is a (ex) hoverfly! Hoverflies make up a big family, many members of which mimic bees and wasps through their abdominal stripes, though they are harmless. One way of telling it's a hoverfly is the presence of a vein in the wing which runs parallel to the trailing edge but set a little way in, which shows clearly in your photos. Also being a fly it has one pair of wings, rather than the 2 pairs which bees and wasps have.
Shocking - the real Saint wouldn’t be traumatised by a hoverfly
Indeed so - and he'd offer it a drink at least!
