Please call me an idiot if this is obvious, but I found this weirdly shaped stone by the river and I can't help wondering if there is somethng more to it. Can anyone help identify it, or offer any tips for a complete novice on how you can actually tell the difference between bones, stones and fossils? Is it just something that you learn with experience?
Thanks for the quick response! I hadn't thought about waterlogging changing the weight- that does make sense as I had thought it was a bit heavy to be bone. I'm going to assume that it was probably left there by a dog that had been chewing on it, so at least I've cleared up some litter and found out what a cow's kneebone looks like!
