Moths in the house identity

My mum has a load of moths in her house but we can not work out what they are or where they came from. We had a look on the internet but coluldn't see anything exactly the same. They are about 1 and 1/2 cms long with a pale/light grey body/head and darker wings. Here are some (not very good) photos.

many thanks

They could well be (as you probably suspect) clothes moth of one sort or another (there are several species).

But without a better photo, we're not going to be able to pin it down on the forum. A better photo would enable us to see not only the pattern and colour, but also the degree of wear (old individuals can be very weakly coloured due to loss of scales). Unless we can gauge the degree of wear, we won't know how much faith to put in the apparent colouration.

In any case, you can consult your local council's pest control office(r). Not only should they be able to ID it, they should advise you on control measures.

    Hi ElleP,

I think you'll find these are Bee Moths. the photos you put up at this point they both look like males, but the females are quite different.  I've added a link for both UKMoths and HantsMoths for you to see, as the photos on HantsMoths look more like your photos.

The mystery is why they are in your Mums house. They are listed as occasionally appearing in April although its more common to find the adults in June thru to September. These are associated with social bees and wasps, the larva feed inside and around the nests. If your Mum has an attic it might be worth checking for wasps nests, or you may have somoene with bees near by.

    Hope this helps
