Unknown caterpillars by the Thames, making a web enmass

I found these caterpillars over the weekend. Several 'nests' in short shrub trees. Making webbing. Does anyone know what they are or if they are native please.

Thank you

  • These are caterpillars of the Brown Tail moth, Euproctis chrysorrhoea, one of several tent making caterpillars.

These have extremely irritant hairs that generally cause a rash if touched and they also carry in the wind. In small numbers and away from people this is not generally a problem. However, in some years they can be more prolific and some councils choose to 'control' them if they are in public areas.
