Hello Im looking to Identify a Slab wood Table I have was hoping someone can tell me the type Of tree this came from. Best regards Robert
Distinctively darker heartwood... maybe yew?
But it is a large piece, and large bits of yew are rare.
Oak would be more common, but I don't think it is that because I can't see the characteristic medullar rays.
Any clues from the bark (can't really see from the photo)?
Other opinions needed...
The very rough bark rules out yew.
Is it likely it came from North America? If so, I'm on shaky ground. You have many oaks with whose timber I am unfamilar. The rough bark would certainly fit with a mature oak of many species (but not rough enough for cork oak). I just don't know about the medullar rays in American oaks. I am pretty sure it is a temperate hardwood (not tropical). The rough bark and large diameter rules out some groups, eg. cherries and birches but that doesn't really help because there are too many possibilities remaining. So ... not much help, I'm afraid.
