What spider is this??

Hi,  I found this spider in my outhouse, was very dosile, didn't run or flinch much when cupping and removing..bit worried as my 2 year old plays in the outhouse and loves spiders unlike myself :-/  I'm from south east Uk

    Hi Jellyneansme,

This is a very common spider in the S & SE of England, especially on the exterior of buildings & outhouses/sheds. It's Steatoda nobilis, one of the false widow species. Like all British spiders it is not dangerous, nor deadly. It does, however, have an unpleasant bite, but in normal circumstances this is very unlikely to happen (as you note, they are typically docile). Usually the spider is crushed against the skin in bite events.

Given your concerns about your 2yr old, you might feel better removing any from the outhouse, but bear in mind that as they are probably established in your area, they may eventually be replaced by new individuals. Though it is prudent to excercise caution, bees, wasps, peanuts are more of a worry, relatively speaking.
