A friend of mine is a Safari guide in South Africa.
He came accross this recently and was unable to identify it. Despite asking his local bug ID websites, nobody has been forthcoming with an ID yet.
If anyone has any suggestions, they would be appreciated.
This is the detail he was able to provide:
45mm in length. Nocturnal Feeder on Bluebush (Diospyros lycioides).
Found between Bloemfontein and Brandfort, Free State, South Africa.
I'm afraid this forum isn't very good for identifying exotic insects, so what I like to recommend in these cases is using other forums. Here are three of my favourites:
Project Noah "is a tool to explore and document wildlife and a platform to harness the power of citizen scientists everywhere". http://www.projectnoah.org/
BugGuide.Net "Identification, Images, & Information For Insects, Spiders & Their Kin For the United States & Canada" http://bugguide.net/node/view/15740
What’s That Bug? "Do you have a bug you need identified? Do you want to submit an interesting photo of a bug?" http://www.whatsthatbug.com/
iSpot "Learn more about wildlife, share your interest with a friendly community and get help identifying what you have seen". http://www.ispotnature.org/
I hope this helps.
