Can you help me to identify an insect found in a building near to a lake in a park in Stoke on Trent? At first glance I thought it was an earwig, but I'm fairly sure it isn't.
It was about 2cm long, has a dark brown segmented body and tan spines coming off both sides. It's front 2 pairs of legs were brown and the back pair were tan colour. It had very short antenae and a short, sharp tail.
Thanks for this - I think you are right, it's an alderfly larvae. Just a bit weird that it's so far away from the water - my building is a good 30' from the edge of the lake and I thought the larvae lived either in the water or just a few inches away from it. If I see it again (it's gone into hiding) I'll try and catch it and take it to the lake side.
