Spider ID

This spider spent a month or two scurrying across our living room floor late at night - it ran very fast, so I was quite proud of myself when I finally caught it.  Having seem a black widow like spider today in our shed (which was not going to run fast anywhere), I went looking into what it was. I was surprised to see photos of this very different spider being called a false widow spider - they are just so different!IMG_9503.JPGIMG_9504.JPG

What is this spider? I am happy that the one I saw today was a false widow.

    Hi Catharine,

The spider you have caught is one of the Tegenaria species, these are what people commonly refer to as "house spiders", though there are many other spiders that are also commonly found in houses.

Despite their imposing size & speed, they are harmless.
