Can anyone identify the spider that we just caught?

    Hi Stusarge,

This is a Steatoda grossa, AKA the cupboard spider.

It is one of the false widow species and has occasionally been implicated in bites. However, it is more widespread than the more infamous Steatoda nobilis, but somewhat more reclusive, preferring quieter, darker areas.

It is typically a rather shy & docile spider, I find these semi-regularly, in my bedroom mostly, and usually just relocate them to other parts of the home where they usually just scurry off looking for the nearest cover/hiding place. I can understand people preferring to relocate them outside. Even in areas where they are common, they may be rarely seen, apart from wandering males.
