Spotted this bird in our garden earlier today, it then came down for some seed that was on the ground.
It looks very much like a Chaffinch apart from the white mottled head. Any ideas what it is please?
It is a leucistic chaffinch.
Leucism is "a condition in animals characterized by reduced pigmentation. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin"
Here's one like yours
And here's a discussion which mentions it, plus some others I suspect you will find interesting (white blackbird and blue-headed blue tit)
Also, outside the world of birds, if you do a Google image search, you'll see many other examples of leucism
Leucistic Chaffinches are a bit confusing, I think I should go to your links and find out more....
Also thanks to DHT if you're reading this, for adding a few more pics of it. I can't wait to find out more!
Thank you MikeHardman. I shall look at the links you posted and find out more on it.
Thanks too AnimalGirl.
The bird came back again this morning, so I shall enjoy looking at it some more
