Hi, came across this (what I think may be a) skull in a hollow stump of a willow tree while checking for birds nests at work, at about 5ft up and half buried in soil. At first glance I thought it was some sort of amphibian because of the markings on it. Also in this hollow were a few smaller bones which looked like they could be ribs, very fine and thin compared to this one. Possible found cache of a rat or bird?
Be aware this is an african bird exibit featuring a few species of duck, pelicans, cranes, and storks, but was once just an open air pond so other wildlife could come and go freely.
This is the pelvis from a medium sized duck.
Oh wow, really! There's going to be no way of knowing what species it is, is there. We have 15 different species Would you have any idea of how long ago it might have died or would you need a closer look/more info. I will check the records and see how long ago we last reported a 'missing' duck.
This is really cool, thanks so much!!
I used to have a very similar skull I found on a beach on the isle of arran, it was suggested to me that it was a cormorrants skull
