fossil identification

I found this at Worthing Beach today and think it is a piece of fossilised ammonite. Would that be correct?

It is definitely a piece of fossilised ammonite.  The question is, how did it get there. Ammonites are preserved in the chalk as internal moulds.  The fossil you have does not look like it is from the chalk, and must be an erratic ...  imported stone? sea defenses?
