can anybody help me, i found this insect at my back door tonight 18th dec 2013, does anybody know what this is? it has a body segrigated like a wasp but isnt shiny like a wasp, it has black and beige patches on its back and black and white on its belly and it appears to have been playing dead at first, it is around about the size of a wasp but fatter and had no wings, help please
It is a female winter moth, Operophtera brumata.
She does have wings, but only just - they are atrophied.
She attracts males (which do have wings); it is possible you may see one if you keep an eye on her.
hiya had a look at the link you put up it looked more like a bug than a moth it wasnt furry looking it was smooth with a exosceleton and definetly no wings i watched it for a good while about half an hour, the pattern on the back was different to the pictures i looked at aswell it was almost like spots like dabbing a paint brush i cant definetly see where you are coming from though as the pictures arent that clear but i would describe it more as a beetle, thank you
You're right to push me!
I was a bit quick off the mark.
On further consideration, it is a closer match for mottled umber, Erannis defoliaria.
Again, it is a female (and females of this species are completely wingless, and tend to be less 'hairy' than winter moth). The patterning varies from individual to individual.
