Spider in my kitchen

Can anyone identify this spider? I think it may be a false widow. I have heard they are harmless but I have Grandchildren and want to be sure.

    Hi Blush,

Yes this is a noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis), most likely a male. Whilst they are not deadly, nor dangerous, a bite may well be considered unwelcome. Males wander around looking for mates & can end up in all sorts of places that could possibly bring them into conflict with us...I tend to throw males outdoors for this reason.

Females are more likely to make a web and stick to it, I don't mind these so much and leave them be, so long as they are not in the bedroom or bathroom. Nevertheless, I'm sure many folk would be happier with these outdoors too.

Neither gender is aggressive, bites occur very rarely, usually the result of a spider being crushed against the skin if trapped in clothing.
