Hi guys. I found this lovely rock today on coastal beach walk. I think it's quartz. Does anyone have any tips how I can clean it as it's a bit green and grimy.
The greeny griminess: Washing in warm soapy water and brushing with an old toothbrush will get rid of most of it. Rock hounds also use old dental tools to clean-up specimens.
There are actually quite a few minerals that it could be, but quartz and calcite are the most likely.
Find an old piece of glass (a bottle/jar from the recycling will do) and see if you can scratch the glass with your specimen. If you can, it is probably quartz; if not, it is probably calcite.
Very nice Ladylu
I think Mike has 'nailed it' if you know what i mean.
In geological circles there is a name for the different hardness's of rocks and minerals, i know what it is but i cannot spell it!
certainly Tabfish -
Thanks for the tips at fish and mike. I've given it a nice scrub and it looks lovely. I alson tried the scratch test and it seems to be calcite. Brilliant.
Thanks again both for your help
