spider id

What kind of spider is this? Is it a false widow i found it in my mams house.

    No, this isn't a false widow, it's a harmless missing sector orb weaver (Zygiells species), but they are occasionally mistaken for false widows.


    As you can see the head is light brown around the sides, with a thick, dark central stripe. Steatodas (false widows) tend to have a more uniform colouring accross the whole of the head. The spider in the photo has very clear stripes around the legs - adult false widows tend to have more uniform colouring on the legs, though sub-adult steatoda nobilis can have some striping.
