Spider found in porch! What is it?

I daren't get any closer to get a clearer photo.  This spider was 1 inch long from end of back leg to tip of front leg.  The photo doesn't show the white 'blurry' spots on it's back which were quite clear in reality.  A larger spot at the front, and smaller under/behind it.64447_10151739878911922_699225978_n.jpg

    Hi Vicki,

This is Steatoda grossa, AKA the cupboard spider. It is one of the false widow species, more widespread but not as infamous as the noble false widow (S. nobilis). They're usually shy, preferring quieter, darker areas. They are not aggressive and their reclusive behaviour means that they are unlikely to be a problem.
