False widow / orb weaver?

As you all know i suffer Arachnophobia.

And seeing spiders sends me through anxiety problems.

i saw this little guy in the corner above the front door in my house. and so i decided to take a picture of it.

Now, I don't think its a false widow. ive seen many pictures of spiders on here identified as false widows and this doesnt look like them, but i think it fits in with that whole species somewhere.

i had mistaken a false widow for an 'Orb weaver' before. And wondered if it could perhaps be one of those?

the spider is quite small. and from the naked eye looks black with markings (which lead me to believe it was a false widow). but a zoomed in version of the same picture determins otherwise.

There is also a small web near the spider - if you can see it, it may help with the identification process.

i'd just like some help in indentifying it, as the exagerated news stories has sparked major anxiety problems for me.

i have attatched the original image and the zoomed in image.

Maybe I'm not looking at the photo correctly but this seems to be an insect with 6 legs which would mean it isn't any type of spider at all. Otherwise it is a spider that routinely hides two legs under its body.

    Hi Lou,

This is another Missing Sector Orb Web spider, Zygiella x-notata.

I feel that this species is a good one for arachnophobes to begin with - they are entirely harmless and non threatening.

See if you can get used to this one, give it a jolly name and let it become a  'friend' perhaps. Spiders really aren't as sinister as their reputation.
