Tree Identification - Black Poplar?

Hello

I would be really grateful if anyone could hazard a guess at identifying this tree, please.

I can't help but think it is a black poplar but, common things being common, I just cannot convince myself.

This tree was found in a very wet soil, somewhat waterlogged and I would crudely describe it as a clayey soil (I didn't test it).  There is a small stream behind the tree, and the land is a flood plain.

The leaves are maybe around 10 cm long and serrated but blunt (hopefully you can see this in one of the photographs).

The tree was found in central England.

The tree was maybe about 20 m tall, with the branches protruding from about maybe 3 m from the base.

I am afraid I could not see any fruit to assist in ID.

Many thanks for any suggestions received

Chris
