Spider Identification

Can anyone help identify this spiderplease. A friend found it crawling on her drive in Bedfordshire.

    It's a bit indistinct against the cryptic background but I'd say that's a garden spider or cross spider  Araneus diadematus.

    There can be a lot of variation in the boldness of the markings and the general colour. More than a few orange/red ones like this appears to be have showed up on this forum lately - they are very eye-catching after all. They're common and widespread; normally you'd see them in their orb webs hanging between vegatation and other supports in the garden. This one may have been knocked off its web and was on the move to find a new home.
