Spider ID? Red+White Spots

Hey!

A friend of mine just posted this photo on Facebook. I've honestly never seen a spider like this in the UK so thought I'd see if anyone knows what it is.

Thanks

I'd say that's an Araneus diadematus, more commonly known as the Garden or Cross Spider. It's widespread and commonly found on its orb web painstakingly woven between vegetation or other convenient structures. Their colour is quite variable as the photos here and elsewhere on a web search will show:

http://srs.britishspiders.org.uk/portal.php/p/Summary/s/Araneus+diadematus  but you can usually discern a cross marking near the front of the abdomen, formed by the light markings. It's more distinct in some specimens than others. The brightly coloured ones are very  striking and pretty, no mistake.
