I found this specimen on 2nd November on chalk grassland in North Dorset. My ID suggests a female Agiope aurantia, the yellow (or yellow and black) garden or orb spider, a North American species, but I see that from your blogs that it is Aranes mamoreus, var. pyramidatus, described as common, but I haven't seen one before. Photographs attached.
This is the Marbled Orb Web spider, Araneus marmoreus var. pyramidatus. This var of these species is the most frequent in the UK. It's a good UK species found mostly in the southern counties but is far less abundant than the other Araneus species.
