This is a female Steatoda nobilis, the noble false widow. Is she on the floor? They usually like to be up high & rarely leave their webs. They're quite docile, so I don't mind them indoors as long as they are not in the bedroom, or bathroom...but I can understand most folks not being too keen on the idea. She'll do fine outdoors.
Thanks for replying so quickly, she is sat on a chopping board in the photo, I removed the spider from next to my towel in our bathroom. Is there likely to be males around, is there much difference in appearance?
Males are less common, they have smaller abdomens, often a little more drab in colour & harder to tell from generic spiders at a glance. They still have the shield like mark on the abdomen. They don't live in colonies, or nests, so even in areas where they are established you don't tend to see as high concentrations as you might with other, common spiders. Males only live for a season, don't eat. when mature and are likely to largely be dying off as the Winter comes.
