Ant defends 'flock'

Posted this in 'home & garden' a while ago, but thought it might belong in 'ants'.......

This ant was tackling a fairly determined harlequin ladybird heading towards it's aphid 'flock' further along the stem of the plant. Remarkably, the ladybird was eventually deterred and went looking for lunch elsewhere.....

Ants entering into this mutualistic relationship with aphids benefit from the honeydew produced by the sap-suckers and the aphids gain protection from predators, such as the ladybird seen here.
