Hello. Yesterday morning I noticed that this spider was in my room. I also have a bite on my arm, though I'm unable to determine what bit me. I'm wondering if it may have been this. It's quite small and initially I assumed it was a house spider of bog standard species - until I looked at it. As you can see it has a pretty amazing and well defined "skull" on it's back. Not something I've seen on a spider in East Anglia before. Can anyone tell me what it may be please? Also, my swollen and tender arm... Eek. Any possible relation to the spider? Help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
I think it's an Amaurobius (lace web spider) but a closer photo would help with an ID. Re the reddening, it's hard to say whether that could be caused by the spider. The only spider ever to have bitten me was an Amaurobius and I didn't get this reaction, but people react differently. But can't you find an actual bite mark?
Thanks for your reply.
I've just googled that species and yes you could be spot on with that. As for the bite, yes, I have an actual bite in the centre of the swelling (slightly raised, red, tender) but could be a mosquito. I wasn't sure though because I'd seen the spider and thought it looked a bit odd. Wanted to double check with people who know their Arachnids. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and didn't know if it might do lasting damage if it was a strange spider bite.
