Help Identifying Spider

Hi,

Can anyone identify this spider? With all the fuss about false widows it's got me feeling a little nervous.

Until today i'd only seen small babies, but then I met the mother! It's body is bigger than a penny, and it reared up like it was going to attack.

Thanks

    Re: Help Identifying Spider

    Hi Kat,

This is a walnut orb weaver (Nuctenea umbratica). They're quite common but usually hide away during the day. Some have noted that they don't like to be handled & can give a little nip (without any lasting side effects), others have handled them with no mishap...I guess it depends on the individual?

A false widow would most likely have fled, rather than reared up. They're quite shy & docile, whilst they can bite, this is extremely rare & the venom is not dangerous to healthy humans.

    Regards, Mark.
