This is a Common Garden spider - AKA the Garden Cross spider, Araneus diadematus.

The females, as this is, are at their largest at this time of year and full of eggs. Eggs will be laid in a silken sack soon and she will protect these for as long as she is able, but sadly succumbs to the cold of winter and paucity of insect prey - the eggs hatch in spring and it all starts again.

They are harmless - and great natural fly traps.
