Can anyone identify this? I found it on johnsons beach, perdido key florida last week. Its approx 50p sized.
It is part of an oyster.
It may be a species of Ostrea, but the genus could be another one in the Ostreidae or Gryphaeidae.
ID is not helped by the fact that oysters are varied in form, eg:
(It also has similarities with a fragment of limpet.)
I'd appreciate another opinion... ...Tabfish?...
Thanks for that, looks so interesting couldn't leave it behind.
I agree with you Mike, although it is something I have not found fossilised but have eaten!
