Fossil wood advice please

I have found a huge piece of petrefied wood, but I don't know how to get it out of the ground.  I found it in ossett, West Yorkshire UK and it is carboniferous in age.  It is a giant root and so far I have uncovered 1m of it, but I can't find the end of it and it is solidly in the semi sandstone.  What is the best tool to get it out with?  I am not really experienced with digging huge pieces out because the biggest one I've found so far is 8 inches and this one is 45 inches and I'm still trying to get to the end of it.  Would a hammer and a chisel probably get it out?
