False Widow or not?

Hello,

I've got a customer who is concerned he has false widow spiders and indeed he has taken them for identification at a well known public aquarium that has spiders and insects. They put them under the microscope and confirmed that they are. I'm not so sure. What do you think?

Many thanks,

      Hi Sarah,

This is a lace weaver spider (Amaurobius species), a spider commonly found in & around houses. There are a few species (A. similis, A. fenestralis, etc.) it's not possible to tell exactly which this is by the photo.

They are the most common genus of spider I see in my home.

      Regards, Mark.

    Re: False Widow or not?

    Hi Remo,

This is not a false widow, it looks to be the very common & quite harmless missing sector orb weaver (Zygiella species), most windows probably have one or two at least.

It is certainly not a false widow, they don't typically have the dark "V" shaped marking running down the centre of the head.

    Regards, Mark.
