Carboniferous plant fossil id please

image.jpgDo you know what this is?  It is carboniferous in age and comes from Ossett, West Yorkshire, UK.  I have found several pieces that are exactly the same as this.  Is it a piece of bark of one of those trees which I think is called a scale tree?  Also I wanted to ask you, when I go fossil hunting in a drought, I barely find any, but when I go after heavy rain there is loads.  Why is this happening?  Is it because of erosion?
