I found this stuffed animal on an antique shop in Brazil. The owner said it was a baby sloth, although it looks like some kind of rodent because of its tail. Can anyone please help me identify this intriguing animal and calm my curiosity? Do forgive the low quality images, they were taken with a camera phone. Any and all help is much appreciated.
It definitely isn't a rodent. After a bit of a search I think it's a Pigmy or Silky Anteater Cyclopes didactylus. The huge front claws are typical of sloths and other animals that rip open ants nests to eat the ants (or termites). About what size was it? It looks more like pictures of an adult not a baby.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silky_Anteater says "Adults have a total length ranging from 360 to 450 mm (14 to 18 in), including a tail 17 to 24 cm (6.7 to 9.4 in) long, and weigh from 175 to 400 g (6.2 to 14 oz)."
Hope that helps.
Thank you for the information, very helpful indeed! It does look very much like a Pigmy or Silky Anteater, although it was much smaller, the body measured about 13cm (5 inches) without the tail, which was about the same size. Could this be a baby Silky Anteater?
PS It could after all be a baby sloth. check out http://slothadventure.wordpress.com/2012/06/17/heyy-baby-3/
Think we will have to leave it to the experts to be sure!
Sloths have either short stubby tails or no visible tail at all. It's definitely not a sloth
I also think that this is Cyclopes didactylus, this is a type of anteater (not a type of sloth) and does have a long tail
