Could someone identify this spider for me please. I'm sorry that the photo is of poor quality buy its taken from inside my conservatory and it's very dark outside. I'm a bit nervous that it may be a false widow. I live in the South West of Birmingham.
As you say the photos are a bit ropey, however spider seems to be sitting in the centre of a classic orb web? (False widows make scruffy webs like hammocks).
The head looks to be dark in the centre and lighter brown at the sides. (False widows tend to have more uniform colouring accross the head).
Can you confirm please? I don't think it is a false widow (I suspect it's a harmless missing sector orb weaver), but even if it was, it won't leave the web, you are safe ...and if it is high up, out of the way, it's unlikely to be a problem anyway.
I think you may be right. I've tried to get a better photo for you now that it's light outside, but the spider is hiding right in the corner of the window.
However, I can see its web and there is a very distinct section missing from the web in the top corner near to where the spider is hiding. I guess this confirms that it is in fact a missing sector orb spider.
Thank goodness! When I saw the markings on the back and thought it looked like a skull I just presumed it was a false widow. I know they are quite docile but as it is on the lower window, I was worried about my 5 year old accidentally knocking it and getting a painful bite!
