False Widow ??

Out of pure interest I would like to know if this is a false widow or something else less harmful? sister went to pick it up today because she deals with all unwanted inside guest's but she thought twice after she had a closer look

    Re: False Widow ??

    Hi Dannyannd,

This is a harmless Zygiella species, almost certainly Z. x-notata, a missing secter orb weaver. They are harmless and very common around & in houses, they love living on window frames.

You can see a clear marking on the head, where it is very dark down the centre, but lighter brown around the sides. False widows tend to have a more uniform colouring accross the whole of the head. They don't spin the classic orb type web either.

    Regards, Mark.
