My brother-in-law just found this? Help identifying please

My Brother-in-law just found this and we are pretty sure we already know what species it is but can you confirm it please.

  • Hi Dan,

This is a male Steatoda nobilis (false widow).

General consensus is that the males don't bite (though I see no reason to tempt fate by testing this theory).

The female's bite is not nearly as dangerous as the press would have you believe, comparable to a bee sting? (Any animal bite/sting introduces the risk of subsequent bacterial infection, this would seem to be the basis of many of the reports in the press). Even so the females are fairly shy & docile, not aggressive. The males are often wandering around looking for a mate, whereas females largely stick to their webs.

    Regards, Mark.
