Fake Widow Spider?

Hi,

This little house guest crawled out from under my cooker yesterday, can you confirm if this is a fake widow and if so are we all safe living together (she was quite shy and went back under there as quickly as she came out).

    Re: Fake Widow Spider?

    Hi Gail,

This is Steatoda grossa, indeed one of the false widow species. As you note, they are shy and prefer to hide under things in the dark. Even where they are common, they may rarely be seen. More likely to come accross them in outbuildings, or little used rooms, where there is low footfall.

They are also colloquially known as the cupboard spider. I would remove any you may find in the bedrooms, but they shouldn't cause any issues elsewhere in the house.

Oh, and she, may well be a he. I see few of them, I know they are here because of the wandering males I occasionally see (often easy to mistake for a generic spider at 1st glance) & rarely see a mature female.

    Regards, Mark.
