Hi, wondering if anyone can help, caught this little blighter wondering across the bedroom floor. Not the best quality photo but any ideas? We live in rural west Wales.
Well then, there are similarities with Steatoda nobilis, it's a possibility, but the photos aren't really good enough to confirm.
If you see him again, put him outside, if not...well he'll probably die off shortly. Mature males don't feed, they're probably quite active at the minute as this is their last chance to mate before the weather turns cold.
Not easy to catch on carpet, you could try placing a jar over him & leaving it there, there's a chance he'll climb up towards the base of the jar (they're not keen on being at floor level) & hang there. If you see him do that it'll be a good opportunity to quickly flip the jar, give it a tap, to jolt him to the bottom & put the lid on until you can release him outside.
The British Arachnological Society have a spider recording scheme, so if he can be confirmed with a better picture, it might be worth joining the scheme. They don't appear to have any logged in W Wales at present.
