Fake widow?

This spider is currently living in my bathroom, tucked away in the corner of the window in Sussex.  Looks like a fake widow but not sure which genus it is (if that is the right word).  Any info would be much appreciated.  Is it correct that they are native to the UK?

    Hi Balky,

This is Steatoda nobilis & she's beauty! Do the markings look gold like that in normal light?

If she is out of the way of areas where you are likely to be/putting your hands etc., you shouldn't have any problems. Females, like yours, don't typically stray from their web, or far from their hiding place. She's unlikely to just roam around, willy nilly.

I had one make a web right overhead in my shower, I wasn't comfortable with that...

They didn't originate in the UK, but they have been here a couple of hundred years and are now well established along the South coast & in the South East especially.

    Regards, Mark.

        Hi Balky,

Yes, it is native to the Canaries & Madeira islands.

Colours are variable from individual to individual...and even change as that individual grows.

        Regards, Mark.
