Is this a baby false widow?

Caught this in my bathroom last night after pulling the silky threads off me.

Any advice please.

    Hi Twids,

Yes, it's a male Steatoda nobilis.

I tend tend to relocate males outside (they wander around), females are much better house trained and mostly stick to one place.

        Hi Twids,

1/ A temperature probably somewhat colder than winter in Devon. Mature males don't feed and are thought to die off after a year or so...smaller males, I don't know. When it gets cold they just "shut down" & withdraw into shelter. Female spiders that have a hiding place on exteriors of buildings/sheds etc seem happy enough to stay there & sit the winter out.

2/ I wouldn't necessarily assume that there are lots more. There may be a few in the vicinity, but they tend to stay out of our way, making webs high off the ground. Males are typically much less common than females. They don't live in colonies and once females get to a reasonable size they like a bit of space.

3/ I'm not personally aware...I have heard that spiders in general don't like horse chestnuts...I don't know if there is any truth in this.

I would think that if you were regularly finding them (different individuals), then you may want to look into removal, but they may be difficult to remove without killing more useful spiders. Once removed, it's likely that others may eventually turn up as they are established in your area (as they are here, where they aren't really much of a nuisance).
